Nambour Library

On 19th June three members of the Society visited the genealogical section of the Nambour Library. There are a number of fiche readers available and two film readers, one of which is also a printer. The cost is 50c per copy.

GENEALOGY AREA:Nambour Library

FICHE is kept in boxes which are clearly labelled as to the contents. A quick look revealed the standard Victorian collection and New Zealand BDM's 1840-1920.

New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Tasmania, Western Australia  and South Australia are also covered with the standard collection of records. However, as with all library collections, there are a number of other fiche records for each State. It is always worthwhile poking around at the back of the box to see what little extras are there.

FILMS held include NSW passengers 1824-1900, Colonial Secretary correspondence 1826-1850, South African War records, South Aust. naturalisations, Queensland Cemeteries, NSW ticket of leave lists, NSW pre-1856 baptisms, burials & marriages, NSW naturalisations 1849-1913, Publicans 1830-1855, Inquests 1834-1942 & Depicturing licenses 1837-1852.

BOOKS. A wide selection of reference books are held. Content is similar to our GFHS holdings, but one should inspect the shelves to find those which are different. JOURNALS. The library receives a number of journals. There are similar titles to our own, however not as wide spread.

LOCAL STUDIES AREA.

MAPS. There are a good selection of survey and parish maps in the mapping drawers, together with a number of aerial photographs. The greater part of this collection is centred on the local and Sunshine coast area.

NEWSPAPERS. Films are held of the Nambour Chronicle 1903-1983, together with a comprehensive index, also the Queenslander 1866-1939.

PHONE BOOKS from a wide area are held in this section.

LOCAL STUDIES FILING CABINETS. A wide selection of newspaper cuttings, jottings, reports are held. These are filed under subject headings. There is a good index to the subject headings. One of those collections where little gems can sometimes be discovered.

PHOTOGRAPHS. There are a large number of photographs loaded onto a computer. These are accessed by a program Photo images. A search can be made on a descriptive word, which brings up a set of pictures. These may be viewed individually or as a slide show. A laser print can be obtained on the spot and a photographic print may be ordered from John Oxley Library. As an exercise we typed "Fred" into the search. This resulted in quite a number of images being selected, and we amused ourselves as to who "Fred" was in each slide.

Well worth the visit to this Library for access to some different records.

John Nathan.
